OS Week 05 Assignment #2: How Low (Memory) Can You Go?
- How much (minimum) RAM is needed to boot your Debian Guest?
- Make sure you have a recent backup of your current Debian Guest!
- Rename/clone your current Debian Virtual Guest to (e.g.) “LOW-MEMORY”
- Try to boot the Virtual Guest with a Memory Base size of 999 MB.
- For VirtualBox, see setting System: Motherboard.
- For UTM MacoS, see setting UTM: Hardware: System.
- How Low Can You Go?
- 512 MB?
- 256 MB?
- And less?
- Take Note – of how much memory – when the Linux kernel:
- Still boots NORMAL (e.g., 500 MB).
- Still boots but with unusual messages (e.g., 450 MB).
- Went panic (e.g., 400 MB).
- Boot the Linux kernel with 10-20% more Memory Base above.
- E.g., for 500MB, then boot with 550 MB memory.
- Report The Result at POP QUIZ W05-3 (SCELE).
